Program Committee is the most challenging committee in Fellowship
as it
requires a combination of creativity, organization and follow through.
Program Committee is responsible for the following:
Finding Speakers: Speakers for programs come from a variety of sources;
colleagues, friends, members, teachers, instructors of various kinds including
martial arts, music or material arts, etc.
Scheduling: Ideally, we would have programs rotating through the
five subject areas of spirituality, arts, science and technology,
social justice and Fellowship growth (not numerical but more
personal and community growth). Often scheduling conflicts do not
allow this and sometimes it is considered appropriate to schedule
two consecutive Sundays with a speaker who is presenting an involved
or special topic. While consecutively rotating through our subject
areas is often not possible, over the long term we try to keep our
programs balanced.
Planning order of service: The order of service is relatively set (see below)
but it is still necessary to find a number of readings and music, to wit:
opening reading - chalice lighting
Ancestor Reading - lighting of the Ancestors candle
Music - First Song - fortunately we have several talented musicians that can help with and accompany music. In a pinch
we would sing songs that are old favorites and that can be sung a cappella.
Offertory - reading, music (see music above, or may be recorded) or verbal meditation
Music - Second Song (see Music above)
(Optional) Music - Third Song
Introduction of the Speaker
Circle of Hands and Closing Words
The program committee is responsible for all programs from September
through May, and for the last Sunday of June, July and August. The RE committee
will plan a series of workshop/programs for the rest of the summer (as this summer
(2008) we will be doing the UUA Spirit of Life workshops. We do not meet the Sunday
between Christmas and New Years.
